Gnome 3 ctrl-alt-up/down key binding and Eclipse

May 21st, 2014 Blog 0 Comments

A recent pain point after installing Ubuntu Gnome at work was the key binding for workspace switching up/down. I thought I should record this here as I’m likely to need it again.

Using Eclipse, the key combination for duplicating a line or lines is CTRL-ALT-UP/DOWN and this would no affect as Gnome 3 owned that combination. Changing the shortcut keys via the Gnome settings panel had no affect. My intention was to rewire the workspace switcher to use left/right as opposed to up/down.

After some fiddling, what finally worked was issuing the binding change using gsettings and essentially clearing out the binding from Gnome 3 which then allowed me to remap as required.

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-to-workspace-down "['']"
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-to-workspace-up "['']"
